A man who allegedly fired gunshots after driving erratically through Pierce County was shot and killed by police in Puyallup Friday night.

Fife police say they got a call Friday afternoon about a driver swerving into oncoming traffic and stopping in the middle of the road. A few minutes later, calls came in from Puyallup about a driver doing U-turns in the middle of the road and driving on sidewalks.

Puyallup police say an officer arrived to find the vehicle stopped in the center turn lane in the 800 block of Valley Avenue Northwest. No one was inside, but a shotgun was in the front seat.

Police then heard a shot from the nearby Puyallup Recreation Center. Officers from four different agencies converged on the center.

A semi-automatic rifle was found next to the man.

No officers were hurt.

The seven officers -- five from Puyallup and two from Milton -- were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard when an officer fires their gun.

The Metro Crime Response Unit, the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the incident.
