4A girls basketball state quarterfinals

Inglemoor 56, Bellarmine 33

Inglemoor topped Bellarmine to earn its first state semifinal berth after losing in quarterfinals the last two years.

Inglemoor’s offensive effort was as balanced as you can get, with six different players scoring on the team’s opening 17-0 run, and finishing with at least five points.

“It was a total team effort,” said Inglemoor coach John Agustovo.

Inglemoor center Deja Strother led with 11 points and seven rebounds. Alex Hagan had nine points and ten rebounds, and Mackenzie Gardner added eight points and seven assists.

Inglemoor was ready for Bellarmine’s strength in the post with Claire Martin and Shalyse Smith, both over 6-foot, but that didn’t affect the Vikings’ game plan.

“We’ve been played like that all year, and basically when [Strother] gets doubled or tripled, we rely on the other kids, [forwards Alex] Hagan and [Kennedy] Nicholas and [center Amanda] Luckett to get in there and get what Deja may not get,” Agustovo said.

Bellarmine struggled finding its rhythm offensively, with the Lions’ only first-quarter points coming from a free-throw with 19 seconds left. Center Claire Martin led the Lions with 13 points.

Moses Lake 47, Skyview 36

Moses Lake beat Skyview 47-36 for a semifinal match-up against Inglemoor.

Jessie Loera led Moses Lake with 15 points, and McKenna Walker added 11 points and six rebounds. Ashlee Comastro paced Skyview with 13 points.

Gonzaga Prep 54, Bothell 29

Bothell fell to No. 1 Gonzaga Prep in the school’s first state quarterfinal matchup since 2007.

Going against Gonzaga Prep was a tall order for Bothell, as the Bullpups are now 24-0 and feature two 2014 All-State selections, Otiona Gildon and Laura Stockton, who both average better than 17 points.

“We were just trying to stay in front of [Stockton],” said Bothell coach Kent Schaefer. “She’s faster than what you think, but Keyonna [Jones] did a good job. Keyonna beat her a lot to the end of the paint.”

Gonzaga Prep opened with a 12-2 run led by Gildon and Stockton, who finished with 25 points and 20 points, respectively. Bothell held on in the second quarter to finish out the half trailing by eight. But Gonzaga Prep’s 15-4 advantage in the third quarter pushed the Bullpups out of reach.

With lead scorer wing Taya Corosdale on the bench in foul trouble for most of the third quarter, Jones stepped up and led the Cougars with 14 points and ten rebounds.

Schaefer said having Corosdale, who finished with eight points, sit out shifted Bothell’s momentum in the second half.

“She’s been so much of our scoring punch,” Schaefer said. “For our girls to play without her was hard.”

Bothell will play the loser of the Beamer-Walla Walla game in the consolation semis tomorrow, and Gonzaga Prep will play the winner.

Beamer 55, Walla Walla 48

Beamer made a 13 point comeback to beat Walla Walla 55-48 and earn a semifinal berth against No. 1 Gonzaga Prep.

This is Beamer’s first trip to the Tacoma Dome after being knocked out in regionals the last two years.

“The girls got their composure, and came out in the second half to play Todd Beamer basketball,” said Beamer coach Corey Alexander.

After a sluggish first quarter, Beamer trailed Walla Walla 25-12. Just before the half, guard Quinessa Caylao-Do hit back-to-back threes just after guard Japhera McEachin also hit one, to close the deficit to just four points.

Caylao-Do, who led with 18 points, said those big shots were a big momentum boost going into the second half:

In the fourth quarter, Beamer exploded for 21 points to Walla Walla’s ten to clinch the victory.

“We picked up our defensive intensity,” Alexander said. “That first half, we were stagnant, not really moving on defense, but we got back to doing what we do best.”

Beamer will play Gonzaga Prep in semifinals tomorrow.
